Five Centuries of Traditional
Beliefs
This is a unique story-telling tour where
you will learn our history from another
perspective that you will not find in the
history books: the spiritual traditions of
our Ancestors.
Join us in this journey through time and
space: from the indigenous people living
in Puerto Rico before the Europeans
arrived, the different ethnic groups
brought from África as slaves to the
first criollos.
Cojiba: before sugar &
coffee, there was tobacco.
Before the Europeans arrived to what is
now known as Puerto Rico, our people
cultivated maize, cassava, and tobacco
amongst other things.
Our first stop will be at Museo de la
Historia de Caguas to learn about the
historical evolution of the criollo identity.
As part of the museum route, we will do
a short historical walk with at stop at
Caguas and Tobacco Museum.
At the end we will stop at a local fonda
for an early or late lunch (not included
in price).
From Piñero to Operation
Bootstrap
Jesús T. Piñero, Luis Muñoz
Marín and Felisa Gautier: what
did they have in common? Who
were them?
What happened in Puerto Rico after
the postwar? Lets mention three key
names: Jesús T. Piñero (first Governor
of our territory, appointed by the
United States); Luis Muñoz Marín (first
Governor elected by our people); and
Doña Fela (first woman elected as
Mayor of San Juan). These are three of
many people who started the changes in
Puerto Rico.
La Ruta del Beato
Carlos "Charlie" Rodríguez was born
one month after the 1918 earthquake.
The same year he enrolled at the
university, Piñero was appointed
Governor. During this walk you will learn
the historical events taken place in
Puerto Rico and the role of Abelardo
Díaz Alfaro family in his life.
Taíno, Islam, Mayombe, Palomayombe, Yoruba, Masons, Espiritismo...do they have something in common?
|
One way to understand history and culture is learning the funeral rituals and traditions of each country you visit.
|
Funeral Rituals
We will visit the oldest museum in our
territory and learn different funeral
rituals and traditions: Ostionoides
archaeological site in Luquillo; El
Velorio / The Wake (iconic painting
by Francisco Oller), and Egypt´s
funeral art, plus a visit to a cementery.
Two months before the Hispanoamerican War started, a boy was born in the town of Barranquitas. Who thought he will changed the history of Puerto Rico in the 20th Century.
|
When the Cimarrones escaped, where did they go? When the Europeans arrived, why did they like the Cojiba?
|
The CulTours in this section are offered on a private basis.

African Roots: Drums and
Food in Piñones
The activity takes place in Piñones
where you will learn to dance bomba
with the rhythm of the drums played by
members of the community. At the end
of the dancing class, you will have one
hour on your own to either explore the
area or rent a bike. An alternate route
takes us to María de la Cruz Cave for
a guided walk lead by the community.
