THE MONKS

Created originally in 2001, our
Catholic Heritage of the Old San
Juan
, was adpated to Ruta San Juan
Bautista
established a few years ago
by the Puerto Rico Tourism Board.

But, our walk is more than that. We
have improved it and changed the
name to just
The Monks, historic
journey through time based on the
chronicles written by Pané, Bartolomé
de Las Casas and Iñigo Abbad.

More than a simple walk through the
old city, you will also learn about the
architecture of the temples, history
behind the walls, and how the
Spaniards imposed their beliefs
within the Taínos and African slaves.

1846

1846 is the first of The Neighbor
Next Door S
eries, a story telling
guided
walk based on a real story
that took place in 1846 at what we
know
now as the Old San Juan.  The
walk
starts at Plaza de Dársenas and
ends
at Museo del Mar.

TWILIGHT ZONE

Explore, learn, and have fun while you
walk Old San Juan at twilight.

The walk starts just one hour before
sunset when the Golden Hour warms
the buildings of the old city and the
real "neighbors" of the Old San Juan
awake. Is the year 1881.

Ask the Guide if there are any ghosts
at the Old San Juan? Moonless nights
are the best for ghost tales!

Wait, is the Guide dead or alive?
.

OLD SAN JUAN 101

Why a walk and not a tour?  This is not
the traditional walking tour of Old
San Juan.  Trust me.  This
historic
guided walk narrates
the most
relevant events before the arrival of
Christopher Columbus in 1493 through
the end of the eighteen century. This
is the basic guided walk you should
take if you plan to explore the old city
on your own.

Short of time or slow mobility?  A
sightseeing version of this activity is
available in a
regular or  wheelchair
accessible van
with capacity for two
wheelchairs and 6 to 8 seats
.

OLD SAN JUAN ON WHEELS

How hard it was to live in the
Isleta?
 Who were the landlords?
Extramuros, infidelity, plagues,
entierros, cobblestone streets,
faroleros, and much more that you will
not learn in any other sightseeing tour
of the old city. A short stop at Archivo
General de Puerto Rico is included

(weekdays).
