NOCTURNAL ACTIVITIES AT EL PORTAL VISITOR CENTER
.
Looking for something extra?  For full description of Ancestral Areyto @ El Yunque, please visit this link.
We are back with our nocturnal activities at El Portal Visitor Center.

Our
Night Owling is available as a private activity with a minimum of
two and a maximum of ten participants.  We will be looking for the
Puerto Rican Owl at the entrance and parking of El Portal.

  • 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM, September through March
  • $75 pp, includes parking fee at El Portal

Night walks will be offered as a SPECIAL SHARED EVENT
Wednesday through Saturday as a fund raising for
Fundación
Amigos de El Yunque.  A minimum of 12 participants is required.

  • 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM, September through March
  • $65 pp, includes parking fee at El Portal
El Portal Trail is a short loop trail (0.3 miles) within the land of what it
used to be a coffee plantation, La Catalina; henceforth, an excellent
example of  Secondary Forest.

While we walk in search of critters, and depending on the season,
you will see coffee, breadfruit, plantain, and papaya trees coexisting
with endemic, native, and exotic species.

We will be looking for newborn coquis, glow-in-the-dark mushrooms,
lizards, and other critters.

While the
Night Owling is done in the parking lot area, the walk
includes the parking area and the trail.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Imagine yourself growing over 1,400 feet above sea level, with
exposed buttress roots helping you to stabilize on unstable soils
near river banks and steep cliff edges? The shallowness of the soil
makes you the dominant species at this height of the Forest.  But
you are not alone, other trees, plants, and shrubs have adapted,
including your two friends: the old trees with red crooked bark and
those tall tress with a strong distinctive fragrance.

This is home for three important species growing at El Yunque:
Sierra Palm (
Prestoea montana), Tabonuco (Dacryodes excelsa),
and Palo colorado (
Cyrilla racemiflora).

We will be looking at everything:  from small flowerless briophytes,
elegant giant tree ferns, diminute newborn coquis, glow-in-the-dark
mushrooms, bats, owls, and any other critter showing up.
We are back with our nocturnal activities with a second exclusive
location in the upper level of the Forest.

Regular night hikes are available on a daily for private groups
only
.  Moonless and Full Moon are available once a month.  What
happens when you combine
El Yunque Hidden Wonders with a night
hike? You get
The Hybrid!  This is your best opportunity to explore
El Yunque during daytime and nighttime.

Sorry, this activities is
not sold individually unless it is offered as a
SPECIAL SHARED EVENT. In honor of our beloved Beba, part of the
proceedings will go to
Luquillo Safe Haven For Animals Corp. Feel
free to bring dog food or cleaning products.

Difficulty: Moderate.
