Explore the trails of El Yunque and you will have the  unique
experience of seeing
glow in the dark bacteria, insects,
microorganisms, and mushrooms in their natural environment.

Our target species are newborn coquis, glow-in-the-dark
mushrooms, lizards, critters, and the cocubá.
We need at least three or four
consecutive days of rain to be able to
find
glow in the dark mushrooms.
People ask, do you really see baby coquís during the hikes? Yes, we do!
Join Richard, our Master Guide

Imagine yourself growing over 1,400´ above
sea level,
with exposed buttress roots
helping you to stabilize on unstable soils
near river banks and steep cliff edges?
The shallowness of the soil makes you
the dominant species at this height  of the
Forest.   But you are not alone, other trees,
plants, and shrubs have adapted, including
your two friends: the old trees with red
crooked bark and those tall tress
with a strong distinctive fragrance.

We will be looking at everything:  from small
flowerless bryophytes, elegant giant tree ferns,
diminute newborn coquis, glow-in-the-dark
mushrooms, bats, owls, and any other critter.
Where we go?  Palma de Sierra, Moun
t Britton, Los Picachos
.
We did this tour while on a Royal Caribbean
cruise. This was the BEST excursion I have
ever done. Glad you are up and running again!

AdvenTours / Birding PUERTO RICO
offers island-wide guided tours in
Puerto Rico for the past 34 years!
In 2025 we added more alternatives based on the effort level of your preference, a minimum
of participants is required for to offer any of these hikes. This section includes the nature and
cultural night tours that we offer at El Yunque.

Depending on selected hike and the elevation of the trail, we will be going through different
habitats.  As soon as night arrives, the musicians of the nocturnal orchestra of the Forest will
start playing and the singers will greet you with with their songs.  But wait, were these the first
and only sounds the europeans heard when they arrived in Borikén?

Listen careful to the rythm of the maracas, ocarinas, and mayohuacan.

PRIVATE El Yunque at Night

Forest gate at La Coca is closed by 5:00 PM, you will be in the Forest when crowds are gone!

This version of our Magical Nights at El Yunque was designed for visitors with slow mobility that cannot hike in the trails
of the Forest. Exploring and Connecting with Nature is a 3 hours sightseeing tour of El Yunque National Forest for slow
mobility visitor that we offer during the day. But wait, what happens if we offer it at predusk? This special sightseeing
tour gives you the opportunity to visit our beloved Forest during late hours when the crowds are gone! Your best
storytelling tour of the rain forest!

Take a breath, observe, immerse, and reconnect with the Healing Forest. This activity is for the explorer at heart as we
focus on the natural history, historical and cultural aspects of El Yunque. History and Nature blends in this activity.
After pick-up, we drive to Puente Roto to learn more about one of the most important natural resources in the Forest,
water. Then, we will drive through the PR-191 La Mina North Recreational Corridor. This is the nighttime version of our
sightseeing tour during daytime,
Exploring and Connecting with Nature.

In Search of the Cocubá

In Search of the Cocubá is one of your best options to see El Yunque when the crowds are gone! The trail at El Portal
is a short loop trail of 0.3 miles within the land of an old coffee plantation, Hacienda La Catalina. This area is an
excellent example of a secondary forest.

We will walk in the dark in search of critters and the glow-in-the-dark
Cocubá (Click Beettle) as our Ancestors did.
Depending on the season, you will see endemic species coexsiting with other (coffee, breadfruit, plantain, and papaya
trees). Our target species are newborn coquis, glow-in-the-dark mushrooms, lizards, spiders, scorpions, beetles, plus
the
Cocubá.

This is not a night owling activity. There could be a possibility to hear the owls, but not to search for them as this is
a night hike and the night owling is done in another area. The main purpose of this night hike is to look for critters.

Please note, a minimum of 6 nocturnal adult hikers is required to guarantee this activity. Also, we need two or three
days of consecutive rain before selected date to find glow-in-the-dark mushrooms. The probabilities to see the glow-in-
the-dark mushrooms are higher during our night hikes at Palma de Sierra and Mount Britton.
After the initial six hikers
book this hike, we open it as a public night walk and it will published only in the
Calendar of Shared Night Walks.
This is the only night walk that will be available as a public or special shared event.

Hilda is amazing!!! She was able to accommodate a tour for my family of 12 people at the last minute. She
arranged a guide and transportation. My whole family agreed that the night time walk through the El Yunque
rain forest was the highlight of our trip. We loved seeing the frogs, lightning bugs, snails and hearing the
laughing owl. This was a fantastic trip. I highly recommend it to anyone.
