NIGHT OWLING
.
El Yunque is one of the best spots when you want to find as many endemics
as possible in only one birding site.
What to see?  Lizard Cuckoo, Flycatcher,
Tanager, Woodpecker, Spindalis, Oriole, Emerald, Green Mango, Screech Owl,
Tody, and Bullfinch.
Rare endemics seen in our previous birding trips are the
Elfin-woods Warbler,
Parrot, Vireo, Yellow-shouldered Blackbird, and
Adelaide´s Warbler.
Other near endemic species are:  Antillean Euphonia,
Loggerhead Kingbird, and Lesser Antillean Pewee (rare at the Forest).

From December through February with have an optional half-day birding trip,
Mt. Britton Birding Trip
. This alternative includes Mt. Britton Trail (.8 mile), which
is a challenging trail (often wet and slippery); since we are going birding, it will
take us longer to reach the mountain.

You can spend a full-day at El Yunque or combine the half-day with the Colibrí
Quest (below) or the Eastern Coastal Dry Forest & Los Machos Wetland.

What is the Colibrí Quest?  The Colibrí Quest was designed with hummingbird
lovers in mind.  This is the best opportunity to see the five hummers that nest in
Puerto Rico in a short time frame:
Puerto Rican Emerald, Puerto Rican Green
Mango, Antillean Mango, Antillean Crested Hummingbird, and Green-throated
Carib.

Where we go?  We start birding on the boundaries of El Yunque National Forest
where we will be looking for the Emerald and Green Mango.  Tthen, we go to the
Forest, and then, to the eastern tip of Puerto Rico.

Best time to see them?  They will always be around, but he best time to look for
them is September through April.  This birding trip is an excellent option for
cruise ship passengers since we can start at any time of the day, up to 1:00 PM.
Your ship should be leaving not earlier than 10:00 PM.

BIRDING IN PUERTO RICO - Screech Owls at El Yunque National Forest
As of December 1, 2014, Night Owling at El Yunque National Forest will now be
offered from
October through March.   New regulations at the Forest allow us to
be there up to 50 minutes after sunset.  During selected months, we don´t have to
wait until late to look for it and spend less time at the Forest.

Puerto Rico has two major karst regions, northern and southern.  The northern
karst (North Belt) is located in a subtropical moist forest life zone.  Due to its
topography the karst region the Island.  Whether you are staying in San Juan,
Dorado or the northwestern coast, the North Belt Corridor is an option when
looking for specific birds, such as the flamingo, tropic birds, and yellow-brested
crake; and, of course, endemic species.

This is one of several places where our Iguaca, the PR Amazon, a critically
endangered species can be found.  The Iguaca reproduce from January through
June.  The North Belt Region, at the heartland of our countryside, is one place
where you can find other endemics, such as the Tody, Tanager, Bullfinch, Lizard
Cuckoo, Green Mango, plus  Antillean and Caribbean specialties (Antillean
Euphonia).

This is an excellent alternative for slow mobility participants.
.
Another alternative when you are short of time while in San Juan is Caguas,
specially for late arrivals and/or cruise ship passengers.

Birding trips starts in San Juan (pick-up at hotel or port).  A 30 minute drive takes
us to the town of Caguas, located in the Central/Eastern region of Puerto Rico.
We will be looking for
approximately ten endemic species, plus Antillean and
Caribbean specialties.

If you want to look for the
Plain Pigeon, we should depart from San Juan not later
than 2 PM.  Depending on the season, if you go on the evening birding trip, we
should be returning to your hotel or cruise ship around 7:30 PM; your ship
should be leaving after 9:00 PM to be able book this birding trip.

A stop at the Caguas Botanical Gardens is included.
Due to the number of people visiting El Yunque National Forest during the Holy Week/Weekend (Wednesday through Sunday, including
Good Friday and Easter) and the
month of July, we DO NOT OFFER tours to El Yunque other than the Night Hike and/or Ancestral Areyto.
Access to the Forest is limited and we cannot guarantee the quality during those days.
